Units, lots and pips

One standard lot is 100,000 units of the pair’s base currency. A conventional pip is 0.0001 for non-JPY quote currencies and 0.01 when JPY is the quote currency. A fractional pipette is one tenth of a pip.

pip value in quote currency = units × pip size. Then multiply by the quote-to-account rate. The conversion direction is always one unit of the quote currency expressed in the account currency.

Examples

One standard lot of EUR/USD has a pip value of 10 USD. One standard lot of USD/JPY has a pip value of 1,000 JPY; at 150 JPY per USD, that is about 6.67 USD. Enter the inverse quote-to-account rate, 1 / 150, for the latter manual example.

This calculator handles spot FX pip conventions. Futures tick values and nonstandard broker contract sizes require their own specifications.
